The world’s two largest emitters - the United States and China - through the Sunnylands Statement on Enhancing Cooperation to Address the Climate Crisis have committed to working together to achieve international climate goals. Subnational governments, including states, provinces, and cities have a critical role to play in this endeavor. The historic U.S.-China High-Level Event on Subnational Climate Action will feature high-level leaders in a robust and action-oriented dialogue on how to advance ambitious climate action, highlighting the ways that coordinated subnational climate action can accelerate progress.

  • Welcome Reception (5:00 - 6:30 p.m., May 28) 
  • U.S.-China High-Level Event on Subnational Climate Action: Opening (9:30 a.m.- 11:45 a.m., May 29)
  • San Francisco Bay to Greater Bay Area China Climate Dialogue (8:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m., May 29)
  • U.S.-China High-Level Event on Subnational Climate Action: Interactive Roundtable Discussions (1:30- 5:00 p.m., May 29)
  • Side Event: Special Session on Methane (9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., May 30) 
  • Bay Area Climate Action Site Visits (1:30 -3:30 pm, May 30)

This is the high-level event on subnational climate action that the United States and China announced in the ‘Sunnylands Statement on Enhancing Cooperation to Address the Climate Crisis’ and referenced in the ‘Readout on Meeting of the U.S.-China Working Group on Enhancing Climate Action in the 2020s’ from May 10, 2024.

The welcome reception was held on May 28 at 5 pm.  This gathering was specifically curated for informal discussion with climate thought leaders.
